Urban Origins: Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia is the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, in the area of Modern Iraq. This area provides the earliest evidence of Urbanization. The large growth in size of some of the agricultural villiages formed the basis for the large City-States of the Sumerian Empire from about 3000 B.C. These City-States contained tens of thousands of people, social stratification with political and military classes, innovative technologies and trade connections.
